President Thomas Bach, International Olympic Committee receives Prince Albert of Monaco Leadership in Post Conflict Development Award on September 23, 2024

At a lunch in honour of International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach at the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the UN, HSH Prince Albert II, High Patron of FPCD, and Executive Director Claudia Abate, presented the award.

The FPCD Board of Directors considered:

Following the complex negotiations of the Olympic Truce whereby President Bach deployed all diplomatic resources and his personal influence to maintain the Olympic Truce through to its adoption by the UN General Assembly,

Whereas the Prince Albert of Monaco Leadership in Post Conflict Development Award for Global Leaders was established to recognize extraordinary diplomatic efforts that create the conditions for peace and post conflict development,

Whereas even in times of war and conflict, and fragility, building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal is more relevant than ever.

Whereas the Olympic Truce is the only instrument available to call for a cessation of hostiles in the spirit of the Olympic Games which are a universal symbol of friendship.

Whereas the Olympic Truce creates the conditions necessary for global peace to occur and therefore post conflict development to begin.

Whereas Mr. Thomas Bach, led the efforts of reform of the Olympic Agenda, aligning with the UN Global Goals and ushering in a new era of the Olympic Games that were the most inclusive and sustainable in history,

Whereas, Mr. Thomas Bach employed intense diplomatic efforts which brought about the two Koreas marking together at the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 winter games in Pyeong Chang.

Whereas Mr. Thomas Bach, in a fragmented environment, bravely called upon Member States of the UN to ‘give peace a chance’ upon the adoption of the Olympic Truce,

Whereas Mr. Thomas Bach is the embodiment of the living example of the Olympic Truce, through himself personally and the office he holds, serves as a beacon of hope for the youth of the world as well as global leaders, academics, civil society and humanity at large,

Whereas Mr. Thomas Bach sets the bar higher, faster, stronger for peace and development and therefore most deserving of the first Prince Albert of Monaco Leadership in Post Conflict Development Award dedicated to a world leader.
